- The rains are still here accompanied with flooding in some state across the country and there are produce expected to be seen in the market this season

- This week, Legit.ng visited the fruits market to inquire from traders fruits that are in season, their cost of purchase and availability

In Nigeria, we have two seasons, the dry season and the rainy season; and the farmers are vast with the planting season and the harvest season.

Climate change brings about changes in the weather pattern of countries across the globe. Nigeria is not an exception as there have been changes in recent times in the weather condition reflecting in the harvest of agricultural produce.

The rains are still here and there are some fruits that accompany rainy season. These fruits are harvested and some imported into the country and available in markets across the country. Due to their season, they are sold in affordable prices and their supply very large.

At a popular fruits market in Lagos, Legit.ng inquired from traders the fruits that are in season this period and they gave us the list as well as their cost price depending on the quantity of purchase.

GARDEN EGG

Garden egg is one fruit that you will find in market this season at reasonable price. The supply is high and the cost of purchase given at reasonable rate. Containing low carbohydrates and calories, garden egg is essential for weight management.

Overweight individuals who would love to be in shape this season, can add garden egg into their diet as it is very nutritious in meals.

A bag of big- sized garden egg is sold from N5,000 upwards while the bag of small sized garden-egg is sold from N3,000 upwards; but the sellers’ informed our correspondent that you can get the mixture of the big and small sized garden egg in a bag. TANGERINE

Tangerine is in season now and they are known to be sweet in taste, orange in colour and packed with lots of nutritional elements.

As a citrus fruit, tangerine is also known as mandarin oranges. It contains high nutrients such as vitamins, folate, vitamin C, vitamin A, beta-carotene and potassium that are beneficial to the body system.

At the market, a bag of tangelo is sold from N1,500 while a bag of tangerine depending on the size is sold from N2,000 and N3,000 upwards depending on the quantity of purchase and they are offer for sale at Jakande market, Ketu, Lagos and other major markets in the state.

PAWPAW

Pawpaw is a natural source of vitamins and minerals beneficial to the body. This is its season and the supply of pawpaw in the market now is very high and the cost price is determined by the quantity of purchase and the size of the pawpaw.

With its savory taste and its health benefits, pawpaw is a common fruits enjoyed by all.

At the market, pawpaw is sold at affordable prices and a dozen of a small-sized pawpaw is sold from N1,200 and N1,500 upwards while a dozen of a big sized pawpaw is sold from N2,500 upwards. From the market, you can get pawpaw for as low as N100.

BANANA AND PLANTAIN

This is the season where you can get plantain for as low as N100 same with banana. These two fruits are both nutritional and of good demand by buyers in markets across the state.

Rich in fiber known as pectin and resistant starch, bananas contain lots of nutrients and antioxidant that helps prevent the body from contracting several diseases and controls the rise of blood sugar in the body.

Depending on the market visited, bananas and plantain are sold either by counting or in bunch, a seller informed.

A bag of banana can be purchased from N5,000, N10,000, N15,000 and N20,000 upwards while a bunch of plantain depending on the size and how fresh it is, are sold from N1,500, N3,000, N5,000, N8,000 and N10,000 upwards. They are purchased from neighbouring state within the country and then transported to markets within the country and beyond the shores of Nigeria.

GROUNDNUT

Groundnut is one of the best sources of protein. Although high in fat, groundnut helps lower blood cholesterol levels as well as reduces the risk of coronary diseases.

Groundnut is a rich source of minerals and vitamins, and it is enjoyed roasted, fried or cooked by all. It is used to make delicious soup and can be incorporated into your diet this period as it is enjoyable with fruits like banana and garden egg.

PINEAPPLE

This is one tropical fruits with a juicy taste and dessert flavor of coalesced berries and bromelain enzymes that can break down protein easily. Its antioxidant elements, enzymes and vitamins with fewer calories are beneficial to the body system, no wonder it is often recommended by medical experts.

When taken in moderation, in the right proportion, the vital nutrients of pineapple works wonders for the aged especially menopausal women.

At the market, pineapple is offered for sale in dozen prizes. A dozen of small-sized pineapple is sold from N2,000 upwards while a dozen of the big-sized pineapple is sold from N4,000 upwards.

WATERMELON

One way to identify fruits that are in season in Nigeria is their affordability and availability in the market, watermelon is not an exception.

Watermelon contains lots of water content that helps to keep the body hydrated at all times.

Presently at the market, Watermelon is affordable and available. It is also sold in dozen prizes and can be purchased at Jakande market, Ketu, Lagos.

Depending on the size and how fresh it is, a dozen of watermelon can be purchased from N2,500, N3,000, N5,000, N6,000 and N7,000 upwards.

AVOCADO, BUSH PEAR AND MAIZE

Avocado, bush pear and maize are fruits that are in season this period.

Avocado pear contains a lot of health benefits that are extended from the internal parts of the human body to the skin.

Avocado is that fruit that is consumed in several ways such as eating the fruit, drinking the juice or using the seeds as medicine.

At the market, a small basket of avocado is sold from N2,000 and N3,000 upwards.

The bush pear is a native fruit from the West African region but mainly found in south-east region in Nigeria called Ube. It is eaten with roasted corn or cooked corn. It has a butter-like nature when roasted or heated in hot water and loved by all.

The bush pear and maize is still in the market now but sellers informed that they are almost out of season; hence they are a bit scarce and expensive. As their supply is low leading to the increment in their cost of purchase. A basket of bush pear is sold from N3,000.

GRAPEFRUIT

Grapefruit is very much available in the market now as it is in its season. Having a glass of grapefruit juice in the early hours of the day can go a long way towards preventing constipation for the rest of the day.

Grapefruit is rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other nutrients such as polyphenols, the fiber that offers various health benefits to the body such as heart health management weight loss and more. Interestingly, before bedtime, taking a grapefruit can help you sleep soundly through the night.

Grapefruit is sold in basket and the cost price is determined by the size of the basket. A small basket of grapefruit is sold from N3,000 and a big basket is sold from N4,000 and N5,000 respectively.

Cucumber is that one fruit that contains magnesium potassium and vitamin K. These are nutrients vital for the proper functioning of the cardiovascular system. It contains essential nutrients that contribute to hydration, therefore regular consumption of cucumber keeps you hydrated just like watermelon.

Some love to eat cucumber with groundnut, others love to eat cucumber with rice but presently, cucumber is still very much in the market, and it is sold at affordable prices.

At the market a small bag of cucumber cost N2,000 and N2,500 while a big bag is sold from N4,000 upwards. You can get cucumber from Mile 12 international market, Mile 12, Lagos and Jakande market, Ketu, Lagos.

It is important to note that, the price of these fruit varies; as the market visited, the market situation and the level of supply influences their cost of purchase to a large extent.
