Ondo election: INEC Akeredolu declares winner

- INEC has officially declared Akeredolu as the winner of the Ondo state governorship election

- The APC governorship candidate polled 292,830 ahead of his closest rival, the PDP's candidate, Jegede, who polled 195,791

- With the final declaration, Akeredolu will be governing the state until 2024 unless his victory is nullified by the court

The Independent National Electoral Election (INEC) has declared Governor Rotimi Akeredolu as the winner of the Ondo state governorship election.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 292,830 to defeat his closest rival, Eyitayo Jegede, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who polled 195,791.

Professor Idowu Olayinka, the vice-chancellor of the University of Ibadan who served as the returning officer made the official declaration.

With the INEC's final declaration, Governor Akeredolu will be presiding over the affairs of the state for the next four years unless his victory is nullified by the court.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the governorship candidate of the PDP in the Ondo state governorship election, Jegede, secured a landslide victory in two local government areas: Akure South and Akure North.

The results were announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the early hours of Sunday, October 11.

In Akure South, Jegede polled 47,627 votes to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Rotimi Akeredolu, who secured 17, 277 votes.

The candidate of the Zenith Labor Party (ZLP), Agboola Ajayi, garnered 3,623 votes in the local government.

In Akure North, Jegede polled 12,263 to defeat Akeredolu who secured 9,546 votes and Ajayi who got 1,046 votes.

In another news, a video that purportedly shows the wife of the Ondo state governor, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, being attacked during voting has been described as fake.

The Ondo state First Lady told Channels TV on Saturday, October 10, that desperate politicians were behind the fake video.

She said they resorted to such desperate schemes because they are afraid that her husband was winning the Ondo governorship election.
