After seeing Venus and Serena Williams at the French Open in 1999, Leonard Francois was inspired to train her girls to play tennis. Osaka started working with Patrick Tauma at the ISP Academy at the age of 15.
Osaka's route to the top was highly unusual. Unlike most tennis players who have to pass through the ITF Junior Circuit first, she only took part in a few junior tournaments before heading straight for the ITF Women's circuit.
On her 14th birthday, she played her first qualifying match and then debuted alongside her elder sister Mari in a doubles tournament. She reached the final in four different tournaments but did not go any further than the runner-up position.
In September 2013, just before her 16th birthday, she played her first two qualifying rounds for two separate Women's Tennis Association tours (WTA).
