Pride Magazine Nigeria interrogates the digital in COVID times
The latest edition of Pride Magazine Nigeria – Digital Speaks – recently presented at the 4th Pride Women Conference this past August, takes a look at how technology is changing the world as we know it, and how the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this change.
“The Digital Speaks edition brings to the forefront the transformative nature of digital around the world, and in particular Nigeria,” said Pride Magazine Nigeria’s Director of Public Relations Chukwuemeka Anyiam-Osigwe. “The COVID-19 pandemic has arguably driven the further intertwining of digital in every aspect of our lives. The edition features men and women at the heart of the transformation in the country, and they offer several nuggets of wisdom on how to navigate the new digital normal.”
The featured digital amazons – Ized Uanikhehi, Tosin Faniro-Dada, Omokehinde Thomas and Temitope Ooye, as well as the digital titans – Onyeka Akumah, Femi Bakre, Adewale Yusuf and Kayode Abass, regard digital skills as essential in functioning in today’s world. Kayode Abass shared the news of the edition’s publication on LinkedIn: “We had a roundtable conversation about the present and future direction of the digital space in Nigeria and beyond. As the conversation progressed, Onyeka asked us all, ‘what are the most important digital skills young Nigerians should be aiming for today?’ For me, the answer to the question is not AI, machine learning, data science, robotics, blockchain or even soft skills. Technology is evolving so fast and exponentially that in 5 to 10 years, these skills might be out of date. If I am to advise the upcoming generation, I would advise that they develop the skill of spotting trends, unlearning and relearning. The future belongs to those who can spot the trend and upskill themselves along with the trend.”
Oluseye Soyode-Johnson, an innovation and business development expert at Ericsson, predicts that a post-COVID society will be powered by technology given how well individuals and companies have adapted to a virtual regimen. Jermaine Okpe proclaimed as ‘one to watch’ in the edition, exemplifies the tech-savvy and digital nature of the young generation, as the up-and-coming entrepreneur repurposed the services of his company Jermaine Media for the virtual space.
He noted on Instagram: “This edition is called digital speaks, and it shines the light on creatives who have been able to thrive in the digital space despite and during this COVID-19 pandemic. Shout out to every influencer/creative that has come on our live show and that has worked with us, y’all are the reason for this recognition.” While Kagure Wamunyu, the Eastern Africa Regional Head at Kobo360, recounts how the company’s use of technology in the logistics industry has helped in providing essential goods to people across the African continent.
Other contributors to the edition include Chude Jideonwo of Joy, Inc. and RED, who offers guidance on how to prevent or overcome the mental struggles brought on by the pandemic; Stella Kivilia, a people development expert, on the need and opportunities to empower women; Goke Olaegbe on rebranding the popular news site Legit.ng; and Dr Urenna Onyewuchi on how to revive Nigeria’s power sector, among a number of other fantastic write-ups.
