Singer Yemi Alade becomes new goodwill ambassador for United Nations Development Programme

Top Nigerian music star, Yemi Alade, has recently been appointed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), as their latest goodwill ambassador.
The award-winning artiste’s new role is to help bring to light the impact of poor health and socio-economic systems on the poorest and most vulnerable people which mostly include women in developing countries, UNDP reports.
According to the Shekere crooner, women were part of the billions of people in the world who were trying to survive the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic without any social protection.
She also added that she wanted to do her bit to help these women who had no choice but to work without the option of doing it remotely, to provide for their families during the pandemic.

Alade said:
“I want to lend my voice to these women and other vulnerable people who make up half of the world that’s struggling to make ends meet. They don’t have the luxury of working from home and are putting their health at risk just to put food on the table.”
According to UNDP, the music star also noted that climate change is also an important issue just as they have been trying to address poverty and inequality.
She said that poverty and climate change go hand in hand and that none of them was gender neutral. Yemi Alade also said that women in Nigeria were affected by both.
In her words:
“Climate change and poverty go hand-in-hand, and neither is gender-neutral. Women in developing countries, such as my homeland Nigeria, are disproportionately affected by both.”

Yemi Alade is no doubt one of the leading female artistes in the country who has been able to carve a niche for herself in a male-dominated industry.
She has been able to gain international recognition and work with a number of top foreign artistes.
Legit.ng had earlier reported that the songstress opened up on social media about how the lockdown affected her.
She tweeted about how the lockdown made her to actually start living in her home. The singer who revealed she used to spend more time out of it as she was always travelling, described the feeling as good.
