Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo state, has again praised President Muhammdu Buhari for his sagacity and willingness to safeguard democracy at all cost.
Speaking on Tuesday, September 22, while being presented with his certificate of return alongside his deputy Philips Shaibu, Obaseki said Buhari would be remembered as an icon of true democracy in Nigeria.
The governor noted that had President Buhari not prevailed over the guber election held on Saturday, September 19, the poll would have ended as another blemish on Nigerian electoral process.
Obaseki also stated that the president had in his disposal the power and instruments to make the election favour his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obaseki said:
“I thank President Muhammadu Buhari for the part he played in ensuring a free, fair and credible election. He will be remembered as the father of democracy in Nigeria.
"He had a choice to ensure his party was declared the winner but insisted that the right thing be done."
The governor also praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under the leadership of Professor Mahmood Yakubu for conducting a credible poll and ensuring that the wish of Edo people reflected on the ballot papers.
According to him, INEC was not buckled under pressure as an umpire. The governor suggested that deployment of more technology will ensure that subsequent elections are more fair, credible and reflective of the interest of Nigerians.
"I want to thank the INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu for his intellect in introducing technology to provide transparency in the process."
