Natasha Akpoti, the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2019 election in Kogi state, has congratulated Godwin Obaseki over his second term re-election.
The popular Kogi-born politician also noted that the United States Government’s visa ban on riggers of Kogi and Bayelsa elections played a role in the credibility of the election, adding that it served as a reference point by keeping many of the would-be riggers in check, The Guardian reported.
She added that the United Kingdom's threat to seize the assets of any politicians involved in election interference also worked.
According to her, some of the politicians allegedly involved in election interference seek better healthcare abroad, noting that “many of them were scared so they could not be found wanting.”
Still on the Edo governorship election, Akpoti said the outpouring of votes in favour of Obaseki only proved that sheer determination by the people could make goals prevail.
She also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the people of Edo state. She said:
“I applaud INEC for that; they were able to use technology updating and uploading as the results were coming in so that did not give room for manipulation of results,” she said.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for upholding smooth electoral processes in the Edo governorship election.
El-Rufai stated that as a lover of democracy, the president allowed things to take their natural cause in the just-concluded poll.
He noted that President Buhari-led government, unlike past administrations, will never resort to what people know as federal might to influence the results of polls.
