Obaseki's victory: It's over, Edo people have spoken, Buhari's aide, others react

It is official, the Edo state governorship election has been won by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Governor Godwin Obaseki.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday, September 20, declared Obaseki the winner of the poll.

He polled a total number of 307,955 to defeat his main challenger, Ize-Iyamu who scored 223,619.

The Edo state governor won 13 local governments out of the 18 local government areas of the state. He was returned elected after polling the highest number of votes in the election.

The declaration of the winner has sparked various reactions from political stakeholders and Nigerians generally.

In his reaction, President Muhammadu Buhari's personal assistant on new media, Bashir Ahmad, said: "And it’s finally over. The people of Edo have spoken, that’s the beauty of democracy. It’s not our turn today."

Also reacting, Ovation International publisher Dele Momodu, said: "Nothing succeeds like success... Let the Governor be magnanimous in victory by adopting the spirit of "no victor, no vanquished" and work for the unity and progress of every Edo citizen..."

Also, former Bayelsa senator, Ben Murray-Bruce described Obaseki's victory as "deserving".

"Deserving congratulations to my good friend and brother, @GovernorObaseki. I also congratulate the great people of Edo State for their vigilance and resilience. Edo State has voted for continuity, and progress, and they can rest assured; Obaseki will deliver," he tweeted.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Obaseki following his successful re-election as the governor of Edo state.

This was revealed in a statement released by the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu.

According to the statement, President Buhari advised Obaseki to show grace and humility in victory.
