Nigeria police say it engaged IPOB members in a gun fight

The Enugu state police command claimed that members of the outlawed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) opened fire on security operatives on Sunday, August 23.
The police stated that the attack occurred when operatives were deployed to disperse over 500 members of the group who converged for a meeting at a school's premises, The Nation reported.

The command said some of its officers were deployed to the scene along with those of DSS, army and air force, came under serious gunfire attacks by the hoodlums.
The police said the security operatives returned fire leading to the deaths of two members of the group while other IPOB members escaped with bullets wounds.
According to the police, its men restored normalcy to the area and rescued one officer of the Department of State Services (DSS) who was at the said school to disperse the hoodlums from their unlawful assembly.
It said two other DSS operatives were found lifeless at the scene later confirmed dead.
The police disclosed that five members of the group who were arrested confessed that they had gone to the school to hold a meeting and be trained in martial art and self-defense skills.
Meanwhile, the DSS has accused members of the outlawed IPOB of attacking and killing two of its personnel.
A spokesperson for the DSS, Peter Afunanya in a statement on Sunday, August 23, said the attack occurred in Emene in Enugu state.
Afunanya described the attack as unprovoked, noting that efforts are being made to ensure the killers face justice.
In another news report, an apex Igbo socio-cultural group in Nigeria, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has said people of the southeast are not going to leave Nigeria for anybody.
The spokesperson for the organisation, Mazi Chuks Ibegbu, said Igbos have been part owners of Nigeria since the independence of the country, Vanguard reported.
He insisted that there is no reason why the Igbos should leave Nigeria.
