And this is coming barely two months that tragedy struck in Warri, Delta state on Monday, June 15, as Nigerian football star Erhire Akpoyovwire Felix died after he reportedly battled an unknown illness for some time.
It was gathered that the former Warri Wolves striker who was a cult hero for Nigerian National League side J.Atete had been down with illness.
Manager of Heartland football club Fidelis Ilechukwu described Erhire’s death as unfortunate, adding that he spoke with the player about twenty-four hours before he heard the sad news of his death.
“We spoke on Sunday and he told me he was still very sick, not until I heard that he passed away on Monday. He was buried today (Friday, June 19),” the former MFM FC of Lagos manager told Legit.ng on phone.
Legit.ng earlier reported that Samuel Okwaraji reportedly collapsed ten minutes from the end of a World Cup qualifier against the Palancras Negras of Angola at the national stadium Surulere, Lagos on August 12, 1989.
The day remains the darkest in the history of Nigerian football as the 25-year-old died from what medical officials described as an enlarged heart and high blood pressure, following his collapse on the pitch.
Nigerians have continued to clamour for the player to be honoured even 31 years after he passed on - and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick has stated that the jersey number 6 worn by the late player would be retired.
