Nigeria’s COVID-19 cases hit 51,304 as death toll rises to 996

- It is obvious from the NCDC's new chart that the north now has more states that poses to be more at risk in connection to coronavirus in Nigeria

- The agency revealed on Friday, August 21, that Kaduna now has 63, FCT 51 and Plateau 38 cases

- The death toll is now 996, while the number of confirmed cases has risen to 51,304

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced that the nation now has 51,304 cases of COVID-19 after recording 340 new infections in the night of Friday, August 21.

From its Twitter page, the NCDC revealed that the death toll from the coronavirus pandemic is 996 with 37885 discharged patients who have fully recovered from the disease.

The national health agency also disclosed from its chart that Kaduna is now top on the list among high-risk states in relation to the virus with 63 new infections, while the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has 51 cases added to what it already has.

Next is Plateau state which has 38 more infections as at Friday night.

Lagos state, which had been the epicentre for the pandemic in Nigeria for a very long time, comes fourth on the list with 33 cases.

Meanwhile, the ministry of health had cautioned against the "second wave of Covid-19 pandemic" which it said would be disastrous to the economy of the country and lives.

Speaking during the Covid-19 presidential task force briefing on Monday, August 3, Dr Sani Aliyu who is the coordinator of the committee gave the warning.

Sani urged "businesses that are reopening to align themselves" with the safety protocols and guidelines of the coronavirus.

Nigeria's Covid-19 at the time had hit 44,129 confirmed cases on Monday with 20,663 recoveries and 896 deaths after the NCDC announced 288 new cases in 15 states.

Also, Nigerians had been warned not to lower their guard over the low cases of COVID-19 recorded in the past few days.

The warning was issued by Osagie Ehanire, the minister of health on Monday, August 17, during the Presidential Task Force (PTF) COVID-19 briefing, Daily Trust reported.
