The reopening of schools by the federal government, according to the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) will endanger students and staff
ASUP, therefore, threw its weight behind the resolve of the government to put on hold the planned resumption of all schools in the country, The Daily Trust reports.
The union's national president, Comrade Anderson Ezeibe, called on the government to carry all stakeholders along in the process of reopening schools.
Ezeibe said: “Our union is convinced that any attempt at reopening schools at any level within this period is premature.
“It is common knowledge that our schools are not prepared to cope with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and as such any effort in the direction of reopening the schools now will only endanger the lives of both students and staff.”
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the federal government had said the safety of students and teachers would be its priority when schools resume in the face of COVID-19 pandemic.
The minister of state for education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, made the disclosure on Saturday, July 11, during a webinar.

Nwajiuba said the government was working on how to make the educational system cope with the challenges posed by the pandemic, which has become the new normal.
“Most of the things we are working on are toward carrying learners forward in the new system during this pandemic,” the minister said. In another report, a group established to respond to the coronavirus in Nigeria had urged the federal government not to reopen schools.
The group, Anap Foundation COVID-19 Think Tank, said reopening schools at this time could expose pupils, students, teachers and their families to risks of COVID-19 infection.
