COVID-19: NAF unveils locally-produced emergency ventilators

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has unveiled 2 emergency ventilators produced by a team of researchers from the Air Force Research and Development Centre and Air Force Institute of Technology, Kaduna.

The ventilators were produced in partnership with the faculty of veterinary medicine, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

The emergency ventilators, tagged ‘NAF E-Vents’, were unveiled on Wednesday, May 27 by the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, in Kaduna state.

A statement from NAF spokesman, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, revealed that before the unveiling, the prototype E-Vents had been subjected to successful animal testing using both canine and porcine test subjects.

“The objective of the animal testing was to demonstrate the capacity of the ventilators to support the recovery of patients with respiratory diseases, including acute lung injury and acute respiratory distress syndrome,” the statement noted.

Speaking during the unveiling ceremony, the CAS, who was represented by the NAF Chief of Standards and Evaluation, Air Vice Marshal Remigius Ekeh, stated that the devastating effects of the COVID-19 require that ingenious and proactive steps be taken in order to protect lives and avert any form of national tragedy.

The Nigerian Armed Forces have been very active in their contributions to the fight against coronavirus.

Specifically, the NAF has been at the forefront of contributing its own quota in ensuring that the effects of the pandemic is minimal.

s part of its efforts, the NAF distributed food items and other palliatives to some indigent members of its host communities in Nuwalege, Zamani and Ushafa in the Abuja Municipal and Bwari area councils recently.

Recall that about a month ago, the Armed Forces of Nigeria donated two military laboratories to the federal government to carry out COVID-19 tests in the country.

This was disclosed by the coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Major-General John Enenche, at a press briefing in the Defence Headquarters Abuja on Friday, April 17.

Major-General Enenche stated that the move is aimed at supporting the federal government of Nigeria to tackle the COVID 19 pandemic in the country.
