Blacks have been known to be the oppressed race right from time, starting from how they were colonised by the whites and shipped to Europe during the Atlantic Slave Trade, to work on their fields and serve their masters.
Well, that was many years ago and things have evolved with blacks now having some sort of say in the society. To promote this, it is perhaps why there is something called black excellence, an ideology whereby blacks who are outstanding in their fields are celebrated for their success.
Well, Nigerian singer and activist, Seun Kuti, has taken to his social media page to share his opinion on the idea of black excellence.
According to him, while the idea behind it is noble, intelligent and beautiful, it has a fatal flaw, that it is being irresponsible.
Seun said that the excellent blacks have forgotten that not all blacks can be excellent and that if the humanity of blacks is suddenly being pegged at excellence, what then happens to the regular ones who are just plain people and are not talented in any way or form.
The singer than asked if black excellence is saying that Africans should strive for excellence and perfection before they can be respected?
He also said that most of the people pushing black excellence are Africans trying to ‘outwhite the whites’ and that they have white people names, claiming it is their brand. He then said that is what the whites also called it when they burnt it into the skin of black ancestors.
He wrote: “Black excellence is vibrant, artistic athletic, intelligent, beautiful but it’s fatal flaw? It’s IRRESPONSIBLE!!!
The excellent blacks forget not all Africans can be excellent and if our humanity is suddenly pegged at excellent and perfect what happens to all of us who don’t fit into this category. Most Africans are normal, we can’t jump or run fast. We can’t sing and dance or make beautiful clothes. We are just normal people.
I don’t get it? Are we saying the entire African people must strive for perfection and excellence before we are respected as humans? Moreover many of the images I see promoting this ideology is basically African people trying to ‘outwhite the whites’!!
And many of them have white peoples name sprawled all over them and they say it’s a brand and I’m like yea, that’s what they called it when they burnt it into the skin of your ancestors also, 200 years later and u are branding urself in the name of success.”
