Former Sokoto state governor, Garba Nadama, dies

- A former governor of Sokoto state, Garba Nadama, has died at the age of 82

- Late Nadama was elected deputy governor of Sokoto state in 1979 and became governor in November 1981

- Family sources say he died after a protracted illness and his funeral arrangements will be announced soon

Daily Nigerian is reporting that a former governor of old Sokoto state, Garba Nadama, has died at the age of 82.

According to the report, he died on the night of Monday, May 4 after a protracted illness.

Family sources who spoke to the newspaper said the burial arrangement of the former governor would be announced soon.

Late Nadama was elected deputy governor of Sokoto state in 1979 and became governor in November 1981, following the death of the governor, Shehu Kangiwa.

He was elected governor in 1983 on the platform of the defunct National Party of Nigeria, NPN.

His death comes a few days after a former governor of Borno state, Alhaji Muhammad Goni, was declared dead on Wednesday, April 29, after a brief illness.

Goni was a retired civil servant who served as the governor of Borno state from 1979–1983 in the Nigerian Second Republic.

Goni's death which is suspected to have been caused by COVID-19, came a few days after an influential traditional ruler in his state, Shehu of Bama, Kyari Ibn Umar El-Kanemi, passed away.

The monarch passed away at a hospital in Maiduguri, the state capital in the afternoon on Monday, April 27, which was also suspected to be a case of COVID-19.

Meanwhile, a former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff on Sunday, May 3, described as malicious, reports that he was running away from being tested for COVID-19 after allegedly coming in contact with two cases who have died of the disease.

A statement issued by Kola Adam, a media aide to the former governor of Borno state, said that the report was fabricated.

A media report had alleged that Sheriff, during the burial of his father, came in contact with both the Late Shehu of Bama and former governor Goni.
