COVID-19 anxiety heightens as deceased Katsina doctor met traditional rulers, others

A report by Daily Trust indicates that Dr. Aliyu Yakubu, a private medical practitioner based in Daura, Katsina state, provided medical consultations and services to top traditional rulers and prominent people not long before he passed away from coronavirus‎.

The late doctor who is from Kogi state, returned to Katsina after a trip from Lagos before being hospitalized at the Air Force Referral Hospital.

Hours after admission at the hospital, Yakubu had met several businessmen and relations who had visited him on his sickbed before his untimely death.

Now, fear and apprehension have gripped people of the state over the possibility of COVID-19 spreading after the doctor’s sudden death from coronavirus infection.

In light of this, Lukman Kankia, the Katsina state chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), and Jamilu Mabai, Chief Executive Officer of Cliqq Media Enterprise, have called for a total lockdown of Daura for at least 14 days.

Meanwhile, many people have expressed concern regarding those who handled his corpse for burial rites, the doctors and nurses that attended to the late medical professional during his sickness.

Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina state, while providing an update on the situation, said 35 persons are presently being quarantined and monitored as a result of their contact with the index patient.

Those quarantined include some of the deceased’s patients, family members and some persons who went to pay condolence after his death.

The state governor, Aminu Bello Masari, announced the death of the state’s first coronavirus patient on Tuesday, April 7. The deceased is identified as Dr. Aminu Yakubu, a private medical practitioner based in Daura.

It was gathered that the late doctor recently returned from Lagos to Katsina state.

In a related development, the Katsina state government has lifted the ban on Friday prayers in the state with immediate effect over the COVID-19 pandemic.

This was coming after the state government held a stakeholder meeting with religious leaders, traditional rulers and security agencies in the state.

In a statement signed by the secretary to the state government, Mustapha Inuwa, the government said the Imams were admonished to avoid prolonged sermons in order to discharge their followers within a short period.
