Tiamiyu Kazeem: House of Reps condemn killing of footballer, call for an investigation

- The Nigerian House of Reps has ordered for an investigation into the death of Tiamiyu Kazeem, a young footballer with Remo Star football club

- The lower chamber tasked its committees to ensure that justice must be carried out

- The football star was allegedly killed by Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) operatives in Ogun state on Saturday, February 22

The House of Representatives on Thursday, March 5, called for an investigation into the death of a Remo Stars FC footballer, Tiamiyu Kazeem, after he was allegedly shot by Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) operatives.

According to Premium Times, the lower chamber has mandated the following committees, police affairs, justice, and human rights to investigate and ensure that “justice is not only done but seen to be done.”

Adewunmi Onanuga, representing Ogun state while moving the motion noted that prolonged negligence of the brutality by SARS operatives and the Zonal Intervention Squad (ZIS) on the people may result in a crisis between the police and the citizens.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker further berated the indiscriminate arrest, illegal detention and torture to extort money from both young and old members of the public among operatives of SARS and ZIS.

The inspector-general of police was urged by the House to review the objectives behind the establishment of the tactical squads and restrict their interference with civil and financial crimes.

The Nigeria police was also urged to establish a Special Bureau Unit that monitors the conducts of police officers, arrests and charges erring ones.

The inspector-general of police has since disbanded the Zonal Intervention Squad in Ogun, handing their offices over to the state police command.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Nigeria Police Force has reportedly dismissed Inspector Olaniyi Ogunsoro, the officer who was involved in the death of Tiamiyu Kazeem, a young footballer with Remo Star football club in Ogun state.

The dismissal of Ogunsoro was recommended by the assistant inspector general of police after his trial by the Ogun state police command. It was gathered that the rogue police officer would be prosecuted after his disengagement proceedings were finalized.

In a related development, Ogun state Governor Dapo Abiodun made it clear that the culprits behind the shocking and untimely death of former Remo Stars footballer will be brought to book.

The number one citizen in Ogun state also confirmed on his official social media account that the perpetrator behind the death of the footballer has been arrested in which justice must be done.
