Odion Ighalo: Ferdinand praises Nigerian striker's impact with Man United so far
- Odion Ighalo is gradually getting positive remarks from one of his critics since joining Man United
- Rio Ferdinand described the new thing the Nigerian striker has brought into the Red Devils squad
- Ighalo scored his first goal for the Old Trafford outfit in their 5-0 thrashing of Club Brugge in the Europa League
Odion Ighalo's January move to Man United was criticized by some sections of football experts including Rio Ferdinand.
But the Red Devils' legend has changed his perception of the Nigerian striker since he was recruited into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad, cited on YouTube and Complete Sports.
Ferdinand admitted that the 30-year-old has brought a unique kind play into United's attack, claiming it has been long since the Old Trafford outfit had such a striker.
“If we all had the opportunity to buy someone at the beginning of the transfer window, would he have been top of our list?
“No,” Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel.
“But needs must and he’s in the building now so we’ve got to back him.
“What I liked about him is he’s different to all the other strikers we’ve got.
“He’s someone you can play into, he’s got a physical presence and people can play into him knowing they’re going to get a pass back and they can make moves off of that.
“That’s something to look forward to for the likes of [Bruno] Fernandes playing into him, maybe Rashford when he’s back at some point, Martial playing into him and running.
“And he got a goal. [Juan] Mata – great assist – and where’s he scored the goal? In and around the six-yard box. That’s what you want from your No 9.
“Not enough of those goals have been scored for Man United in recent years so long may that continue,” Ferdinand said.
Ighalo registered his account for the Manchester club in their 5-0 demolition of Club Brugge in the second last 32 Europa League game.
He almost got on the scoresheet in United's 1-1 draw against Everton at Goodison Park, but Jordan Pickford made a fine stop to deny the Nigerian.
