Coronavirus: Nigerians score health ministry low on ability to contain COVID-19 - Poll

As Nigeria records its first case of coronavirus through an an Italian who tested positive to the virus in Lagos, some Nigerians have expressed doubt in the ability of the country's health ministry to contain the spread.

In a poll conducted by Legit.ng on social media, Facebook and Twitter, many Nigerians said they do not trust the health ministry amid the spread of coronavirus.

On Facebook, 82% of over 1,300 respondents said they do not trust the health ministry while only 18% expressed confidence in the ability of the ministry to contain the deadly disease.

The result is similar on Twitter; 63% said they do not trust health ministry while only 16% have trust in the ministry.

About 15% of the respondents said they are not sure while the remaining 6% are indifferent.

Shenikwa Eboigbe said she trusted the health ministry.

"If they could deal with Ebola, am certainly positive they'll be able to handle this one. But we pray and hope it doesn't get to Nigeria," she said.

Susan George also commented: "Nigerian Doctors were able to deal with Ebola out break that time. No one is praying for us to experience this dreadful one. You can ask people not to travel. Just let people be very health conscious."

"I so much trusted out doctors when it comes to virus like this that is not for only the poor but the rich also..... think about Ebola in 2014 Nigeria was the only African country that overcome it speedily without the help of the foreign co," Haroon Nifemi said.

Mathew Godspower does not believe in the ability of the health ministrry.

"Under this govt no way oooooo God we believe you, only u can do this," he said.

Russell Amaogaranya said: "Only with the help of God. But Nigerian government surprised me during Ebola. I think if they are serious, they can fight it."

Martins Tochukwu Smart wrote: "Another opportunity for them to loot".

In a similar development, the Nigerian Senate had warned that the country is not adequately prepared to contain the spread of coronavirus.

The lawmakers rejected the preventive measures put in place by the Federal Ministry of Health and other relevant agencies were not enough.

The Senate, therefore, charged the committee on health to put pressure on the health ministry and other related agencies to ensure that the right thing is done.

Legit.ng, however, notes that some prominent Nigerians have commended the federal government over the measures put in place by the government.
