Scottish parliament approves free sanitary products for every woman

The Scottish parliament has approved plans to make sanitary products free for every woman, making record as the first lawmaking body to do so.
Tampons and sanitary pads will be made available at community centres, youth clubs and pharmacies, Reuters reports.
Legit.ng gathers that 24.1 million pounds (N11,372,862,300) will be spent annually to buy the products.
With the 112 votes, the Period Products (Free Provision) Scotland Bill passed through its first stage.
The bill has moved to second stage where members of the devolved Scottish parliament can propose amendments.
In other news, Finland's woman-led centre-left government has said it will extend paternity leave to seven months to give new fathers the same amount of paid time off work as new mothers.
The disclosure was made on Wednesday, February 5, by the minister of health and social affairs, Aino-Kaisa Pekonen.
Pregnant women are also entitled to a month of pregnancy leave before the expected date of birth.
According to Pekonen, the aim of the reform is to improve gender equality and to boost a declining birth rate in the country.
She said: "This enables better equality between parents and diversity among families."
In a country of around 5.5 million people, the number of newborns fell by around a fifth between 2010 and 2018 to just 47,577 babies.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that a local taxi driver revealed that he buys pads and stores them in his taxi for female passengers.
According to the South African Human Rights Commission, one in 10 girls in Africa miss school because of periods and not being able to afford the appropriate products.
The 31-year-old driver from Limpopo started buying the pads after he saw how some of his female passengers would struggle whenever they were menstruating. He said that he would often see stains on his car seats.
