Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna has expressed his views about which geopolitical zone in Nigeria should be the next to take over the presidency.

The governor said that at the end of President Muhammadu Buhari's administration in 2023, power should be zoned to the south, Vanguard reports.

He said that it is a natural and general understanding in the All Progressives Congress (APC) as well as in Nigeria that power should be rotated between the northern and southern parts of the country.

El-Rufai added that although this is not written anywhere in the constitution of the ruling party, it is acceptable in the spirit of political fairness.

However, El-Rufai did not state any particular sub-region in the south that should be given the chance to produce the next president.

He insisted: “But as a group, the northern APC will have to sit down and endorse someone, most likely someone from the south, because after eight years of Buhari, I don’t think the Presidency should remain in the north unless there is some extenuating circumstances."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that a former governor of Zamfara state, Senator Ahmed Sani Yerima, had declared that President Buhari would not endorse the presidential ambition of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2023.

Yerima, a two-term senator made the statement recently. He said rumours making the rounds that the president and the APC national leader were in agreement on this were inconsequential.

His words: “I don’t think Nigeria belongs to any of them and I don’t think anyone in any position can determine what Nigeria should have. Politics is about an election – for people to decide what they want. So it is the majority of the people that will determine who they want.

“If he signed an agreement with Asiwaju, that agreement cannot be implemented even in getting the ticket. It cannot guarantee Asiwaju a ticket."
