Boko Haram bill: Senator Gyang says proposed legislation is an insult to Nigerians

Istifanus Gyang, the senator representing Plateau North has described the bill seeking to create an agency for repentant Boko Haram terrorists is as an insult to Nigerians.

Senator Gyang in a statement in Jos on Sunday, February 23, condemned and dissociated himself from the bill, The Guardian reports.

He said the bill was an assault on the sensibility of Nigerians in view of the fact that most victims and communities affected by insurgency, banditry and other violent attacks have not gotten the needed support from the government.

Gyang faulted the situation where care and attention for terrorists take precedence over and above that of their victims.

He said the bill had negative implications for the security of the country and called on the Senate to reject it.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has said that Nigerians would in the coming weeks witness an aggressive campaign to rout Boko Haram once and for all.

The Nigerian president made the statement on Sunday, February 23, when condemning the recent Boko Haram attack on Garkida, Adamawa state.

Buhari who also extended his sympathy to families of victims assured citizens that no part of Nigeria would be abandoned to their fate.

He said the insurgents were attacking soft targets out of frustration because his administration had significantly weakened Boko Haram’s ability to invade and hold Nigerian territory unchallenged.

In another report, Nigeria's former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, has called for unity among Nigerians as the country navigates through its security challenges, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Legit.ng gathered that Obasanjo made the call in Abuja during the burial service of Jennifer Etuh, wife of the chairman, Fertiliser Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria (FEPSAN), Thomas Etuh.

The former president said the country would be better off if its citizens see themselves as agents of unity.

Still on security, the process of amending the 2019 law that brought about the creation of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) has been commenced by the state's House of Assembly so as to accommodate Operation Amotekun.

This is as the bill for the new security network went through its first and second reading on Thursday, February 20, during the state legislature's plenary.

In order to beef-up security in the state, operatives of the outfit are allowed to work with other related agencies.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that by the directive of Governor Kayode Fayemi, the Ekiti Ministry of Justice would begin the translation of the legislation that backs the creation of Amotekun alongside other laws into the Yoruba language for better understanding and interpretation.

Commenting on the readiness of the government to carry out the task, the state's commissioner for justice, Olawale Fapohunda, said that the legislation, known as the Ekiti Security Network Agency bills, has been read at the state Assembly.

Fapohunda said that what is next is the signing of the bills into law by the governor, Premium Times reports.

The commissioner said that being that the bills, when signed, will affect the lives of residents of rural communities in the state, it is imperative for them to be fully explained in the people's local language.

He said that this is part of Fayemi's plan to effect greater participation of the people in the business of governance, adding that the translation of the laws will be in phases.
