UNILAG lecturer bags 21 years in prison for harassing female teenage student

Afeez Baruwa, a part-time lecturer at the University of Lagos, has been sentenced to 21- years in prison by an Ikeja high court on Thursday, February 20, for sexually assaulting an 18-year-old admission seeker.
The Nation reports that Justice Josephine Oyefeso presiding over the case convicted Baruwa of a one-count charge of rape brought against him.
The trial judge delivering her judgement said: “The prosecution has proven his case beyond a reasonable doubt. I found him guilty of the charge. I cannot begin to imagine the emotional trauma of the girl.
The convict offended his family, the victim, the society and God. Baruwa I hereby sentenced you to 21 years imprisonment Maximum, this is my judgment.”

In a related development, a randy lecturer was reportedly suspended by the management of the Obafemi Awolowo College (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun state over alleged sexual assault. The lecturer named Monday Omo-Etan was suspended for sexually molesting a 19-year-old female student of the university.
The university's spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, added that Omo-Etan has been handed over to the police. He noted that the latest incident happened less than three weeks after another lecturer of the institution, Olabisi Olaleye, was suspended for a similar offence.

Similarly, the proposed Sexual Harassment of Students in Tertiary Educational Institution Prohibition Bill has pitched the Youth Alive Foundation (YAF) against the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
While YAF is in support of the bill, ASUU is proposing a review of existing laws on sexual harassment in tertiary institutions rather than formulating new ones.
ASUU national president, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, stated this at a public hearing in the Nigerian Senate on Monday, February 17. It was organised by the Senate committee on judiciary, human rights and legal matters headed by Senator Bamidele Opeyemi from Ekiti state.
