Gov Okowa reacts as armed herdsmen attack Delta community, kill 8

- Armed herdsmen continue to cause havoc in local communities across the nation

- The marauders struck in Ughelli North local government area of Delta state recently

- Governor Okowa flayed the crisis which he said had resulted in unwarranted killings of innocent locals

Armed herdsmen on Thursday, February 13 attacked Uwheru kingdom in Ughelli North local government area of Delta state.

The attack led to the death of over eight persons with several others sustaining serious injuries, while properties and farms were destroyed.

Reacting to the attack, Delta state governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa on Friday, February 14, condemned the renewed attack on villagers.

In a statement by his spokesman, Olisa Ifeajika, the governor flayed the crisis which he said had resulted in unwarranted killings of innocent locals.

He said he has directed the commissioner of police and the Brigade Commander, 63 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Asaba, to as a matter of urgency ensure that peace was restored to the communities.

“I have directed the commissioner of police and the Brigade Commander, 63 Brigade, Nigerian Army, to rise to the occasion and bring the culprits to justice.

“As a state, our people have been very receptive to herdsmen and other visitors, but our hospitality and welcoming disposition should not be taken as an act of cowardice.

“The state government will continue to encourage peaceful and harmonious relations between Deltans and their visitors, but will not watch outsiders attack and kill our people any longer,” the governor stated.

Recall that three policemen were killed by suspected herdsmen, along the road at Oshimili North local government area of the state.

The tragic incident took place at police check-point along Ugbolu -Illah road on Tuesday, February 4 after the policemen attempted to stop a motorcycle carrying two male passengers who refused to stop.

Last month, suspected herdsmen killed a farmer and a policeman in Owan community, Ovia north-east local government area of the state.

The farmer was killed on Saturday, January 25, while his brother was also shot by the armed herdsmen.

A few days ago, unknown gunmen suspected to be armed herdsmen attacked and killed three youths and injured one other in Tyana village in Riyom local government area of Plateau state.

A member of the Plateau state House of Assembly representing Riyom state constituency, Hon. Timothy Datong confirmed the attack.
