A cousin to Patience Jonathan, Nigeria's former first lady, Victor Oba, has been arrested by the Bayelsa state police.
Oba, who is the manager of Aridolf Hotels and Spars, a hotel which belongs to Jonathan's wife, was arrested over an alleged attempt to kill his 23-year-old ex-lover, Seigha Atia.
According to a report by The Nation, Oba hit Atia with his car, destroying her left leg beyond treatment. After hitting her, he reportedly zoomed off and left her for dead.
Report has it that some persons who are influential were mounting pressure on the police to release and kill the case.
The police are, however, insisting that justice must be served.
Atia who is in critical condition and currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Yenagoa is said to be a shock after she was told by the doctors that saving her life would require them amputating her leg.
Narrating the incident, the young lady said she and the suspect had an argument on that fateful day. He had brought her things to her house after she quit the relationship.
When he got to her house, she realised her things in the bags he brought were not complete and told him she would be coming to pick them up
A screaming match was said to have ensued which led to Oba driving his car into Atia. He was said to have hit her against her gate and refused to reverse as he pinned her there.
The 23-year-old lady narrated further that he reversed later and zoomed off as she fell to the ground. She said it was her neighbours that screamed for help and came to her rescue.
The young lady stated that she decided to quit the four-month-old relationship after she discovered he was a violent person.
“I’m devastated, but I’m fine, I will rise above it. I feel bad, I didn’t think someone could go this extreme," the victim said.
Atia's family is asking for justice. Her sister, Preye, said the family cannot accept any settlement as they want things legally done the right way.
