Amotekun: Heated reactions as Tinubu finally breaks silence
- Heated reactions are trailing Bola Tinubu's statement regarding his position on the southwest's security outfit, Operation Amotekun
- The APC leader in his statement called for dialogue to settle the controversy around Operation Amotekun just as he noted that the security outfit is not a threat to Nigeria's unity
- While many are applauding Tinubu for the statement, others share contrary views
Bola Tinubu, the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Wednesday, January 22, finally made his position known on Operation Amotekun public.
Operation Amotekun, a regional security outfit formally known as Western Nigeria Security Network, was recently launched by the southwest governors to address the challenges of insecurity in the region.
The security outfit, however, sparked up controversy following the declaration by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, that it is unconstitutional.
Prominent leaders in the southwest, including Afenifere chieftain Ayo Adebanjo and Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, rose in support of the security initiative. Senior lawyers such as Femi Falana (SAN) and Afe Babalola (SAN) also faulted Malami's argument.
Many, however, called out Tinubu for refusing to speak about the controversial issue, speculating that he kept silence to protect his alleged interest in the 2023 presidency.
The APC leader, however, broke his silence on Wednesday with a lengthy statement addressing many issues surrounding Operation Amotekun.
Among other points made, Tinubu argued in support of Amotekun, saying there is no way the regional security outfit can be a threat to the unity or foundation of Nigeria.
He also suggested ways out of the current controversies surrounding the security initiative.
The APC leader's statement, since the early hours of the day, has been a subject of heated debates, comments and reactions on social media.
