BREAKING: Passerby killed as police, shi’ites clash in Abuja
- One passerby in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja has been killed by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force
- The deceased was shot dead while shots were fired at members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria otherwise known as Shi'ites
- The incident happened around the popular Berger area, close to Wuse in the Nigerian capital
The Nation is reporting that one passerby in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja has been killed by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force while shots were fired at members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) otherwise known as Shi'ites.
According to the report, the incident happened around the popular Berger area, close to Wuse in the Nigerian capital.
The procession, which started at Utako ended at Berger, due to the pandemonium as residents scampered to safety when the police started firing live rounds and tear gas canisters.
The body of the passerby caught in the melee was said to have been moved away by the police.
The Shi’ites have been demanding unconditional release of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat detained by the federal government in Kaduna state.
Recall that a confrontation by some Shi'ites members with policemen in Abuja recently left at least five people injured.
The incident happened on Tuesday, January 14, while the Shi'ite members were marching through a busy area in the city.
Late last year, a secondary school student was shot by men of the Nigeria Police Force while they were dispersing protesting members of the outlawed group.
The policemen were said to have opened fire on the Shiites members around Wuse market when the stray bullet hit the teenager. The girl was returning from Government Secondary School, Wuse when the incident occurred.
Two journalists, who were covering the incident were also arrested.

Meanwhile, Kaduna state governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has said he will not release the leader of the Shiites, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.
El-rufai said his decision is due to the pains the sect leader and his supporters had caused the people of Kaduna state for over 30 years before he was arrested.
