Supreme Court upholds Ortom’s election, dismisses Jime’s appeal
- The apex judicial institution in Nigeria has given its decision on the election of Governor Samuel Ortom
- The Supreme Court upheld the victory of Ortom in the last gubernatorial poll in Benue
- The panel ruled that reason to set aside the decision of the Court of Appeal and the election petition tribunal
- The governor's victory had been kicked against by his APC opponent in the state, Emmanuel Jime
The Supreme Court in Abuja on Tuesday, January 21, declared that Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue was the winner of the governorship election in the state.
Emmanuel Jime of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had filed an application after the Benue governor's victory was upheld by the election petition tribunal and the Court of Appeal.
A seven-man panel led that was led by Justice Olabode Rhodes-Vivour gave the verdict, Vanguard reports.
The panel said that after reviewing the appeal made by Jime, it found no basis on which to set aside the decision that was earlier reached by the tribunal and appeal court.
Following this, the apex court, therefore, dismissed the application filed by the APC candidate which challenged Ortom's victory.
The court's judgement, therefore, means that Ortom will remain the governor of Benue for the four years.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Tuesday, January 21, had been fixed as the date when the Supreme Court in Abuja would hear an appeal in the case against the re-election of Ortom.
The victory of Governor Ortom of the PDP in the March 9 gubernatorial poll in Benue had been challenged by Emmanuel Jime, who was the candidate of the APC.
