Boko Haram cuts off Maiduguri electricity supply from national grid

- The insurgents continue to cause havoc in the northeastern state as the Nigerian military battles to keep residents safe
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has disclosed that Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state has been cut off from electricity supply from the national grid by Boko Haram.
TCN made the disclosure via a statement sent to journalists on Sunday, January 19 by its spokesperson, Mrs Ndidi Mbah.
Mbah revealed that Maiduguri and its environs were cut off because the terrorist group damaged a number of its transmission facilities thereby preventing it from supplying electricity to the area.
“The incident affected the 330kV transmission line between Maiduguri and Damaturu. Also, the Damboa-Maiduguri 132kV transmission line has equally been disconnected from the grid for some time, for the same reason,” part of the statement read.
The company, however, revealed that it had located the fault and had arranged to repair the line, stressing that bulk electricity supply would be restored to the town on Monday, January 20.
Meanwhile, more than 1,000 residents have reportedly fled their homes in Auno community of Konduga local government area to Maiduguri following sustained attacks by Boko Haram insurgents along the Maiduguri/Damaturu highway.
Reports say villages within the locality have been facing constant attacks by insurgents despite the presence of several military checkpoints in the area.
“As of this afternoon, more than 1,000 people have fled their homes in Auno, many left on Saturday to Maiduguri. As we are speaking, pickup vans and trucks are conveying people’s belongings. I’ve begged them not to allow the town to be deserted, but they’re not listening to me," a community leader said.

Recall that over the weekend, a gunfight between soldiers and Boko Haram insurgents in the state resulted in the deaths of a soldier and 4 insurgents.
The gunbattle occurred when the terrorists attacked a military checkpoint near Firgi in Bama local government area on Friday evening, January 17.
In a related development, the insurgents on Monday morning, January 20, attacked Mallam Bukaranti village in Konduga local government area of the state.
The terrorists who carried out the attacks at exactly 4.30 am, carted away foodstuff and livestock from the village.
Reports say villagers escaped into the bush after the vigilantes and hunters tipped them off before the insurgents arrived at the village.
