Soldiers abandoned us to Boko Haram after Zulum shouted at them - Residents claim

- The level of security in Borno state has further declined after Governor Babagana Zulum shouted at soldiers

- This was the position of residents in some villages in the state as at Monday, January 20

- The residents said that it is sad that heads of agencies like NNPC, EFCC and others are from the state, yet none of them is saying anything about the issue

Residents in Borno, particularly those along Damaturu-Maiduguri road have cried out over the increased activities of Boko Haram in the state recently.

The residents said that the increased attacks came after the governor of the state, Babagana Zulum, alleged that soldiers were fond of extorting commuters, GThe Cable reports.

Speaking on Monday, January 20, one of the residents said: “Since that day that the governor shouted at soldiers, it appeared all of them left. After that day, there have been attacks on our villages on daily basis.

The resident said that it is sad amid terrible that top personalities like the National Security Adviser (NSA), chief of staff to the president, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation general managing director and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) chairman are all from Borno and none of them is saying anything.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported the security personnel of the Nigeria military and police had been accused of collecting bribes of N1000 from travellers who do not have national identity cards in Borno state.

The allegation was made on Monday, January 6, by Babagana Zulum. Legit.ng gathered that the governor made the accusation when he visited the Maiduguri-Damaturu highway where thousands of travellers were stranded because security officials manning the highway locked it down.

According to the report, the highway is relatively the safest access in and out of Maiduguri, despite suffering repeated Boko Haram attacks recently.
