Boko Haram attacks reportedly force over 1,000 residents to flee homes in Borno

- Residents of Auno community are fleeing to Maiduguri, the Borno state capital over sustained attacks by insurgents along the Maiduguri/Damaturu Highways

- Villages within the locality are reported to be facing constant attacks by insurgents despite the presence of several military checkpoints in the area

- Ahmed Shehu, the chairman of the network of the civil society organisations in Borno confirms that residents of Auno had fled to Maiduguri

More than 1,000 residents have reportedly fled their homes in Auno community of Konduga local government area to Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, following sustained attacks by Boko Haram insurgents along the Maiduguri/Damaturu Highway.

Daily Trust reports that the Villages within the locality have been facing constant attacks by insurgents despite the presence of several military checkpoints in the area. Residents said dozens of people were being killed and many others abducted on a daily basis.

As of this afternoon, more than 1,000 people have fled their homes in Auno, many left on Saturday to Maiduguri. As we are speaking, pickup vans and trucks are conveying people’s belongings. I’ve begged them not to allow the town to be deserted, but they’re not listening to me," a community leader said.

The community leader pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to save them from the insurgents, noting that they voted for him to end the insurgency war.

“President Muhammadu Buhari should come to our aid; we voted for him to end the war, but unfortunately, we’re going backwards in view of the daily attacks on the Maiduguri/ Damaturu Road," he said.

Ahmed Shehu, the chairman of the network of the civil society organizations in Borno confirmed that residents of Auno had fled to Maiduguri.

Meanwhile, a gunfight between soldiers and Boko Haram insurgents in Borno state over the weekend has reportedly resulted in the deaths of a soldier and 4 insurgents.

Daily Trust reports that the gun battle occurred when the terrorists attacked a military checkpoint near Firgi in Bama local government area on Friday evening, January 17.

A source told the newspaper that the dead soldier was on Saturday, January 18, brought to 7 Division Hospital in Maiduguri where the injured troops were also being treated.
