Updated: 5 confirmed killed in Abule-Egba pipeline explosion in Lagos

- The NNPC pipelines in around Abule-Egba area of Lagos was vandalised on Sunday, January 19, leading to a serious inferno

- LASEMA confirmed that five people lost their lives to the ugly incident while many were left seriously injured

- The emergency agency added that 11 buildings, 17 shops, 33 trucks, three cars, and three tricycles were destroyed by the inferno

A pipeline explosion around Ile-Epo, in Abule Egba area of Lagos state on Sunday night, January 19, has left five people killed, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

The emergency agency gave the update via its official Twitter handle on Monday, January 2020.

According to LASEMA, three adult males, one adult female and one female child lost their lives in the ugly incident.

Legit.ng gathers that 11 buildings, 17 shops, 33 trucks, three cars, and three tricycles were destroyed by the inferno.

The Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari has also visited the inferno scene, confirming that five deaths were recorded with many left injured.

Kyari added that the inferno was "all due to unpatriotic acts of vandals" who vandalise NNPC pipelines to steal fuel.

Earlier, Ibrahim Farinloye, the acting coordinator of Lagos territorial office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), had said two dead bodies were already recovered, and several articulated vehicles destroyed as the fire raged on.

"Pipeline Ile Eko. I am there. Several entry points to the scene, I have counted about 8 vehicles affected. It can be more than that," he said

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that residents of Gloryland Estate, Isheri Olofin, Lagos state, woke up on Thursday morning, December 5, to another tragic incident; a fire outbreak.

The fire outbreak which was reportedly caused by a vandalised pipeline in the area sent people scampering for safety as several are feared killed.

The newspaper reports that relevant emergency agencies have been deployed to the area to contain the fire disaster.

As noted in the tweet, the area has been affected by a series of pipeline explosions over the years which have led to the loss of lives and properties.

In other related news, a representative of Alimosho constituency 1 at the Lagos Assembly, Bisi Yusuff, on Monday, November 11, 2019, called for the overhaul of security operatives along pipelines in the state.

Yusuff made the demand when he visited the scene of the explosion of a tanker allegedly belonging to pipeline vandals shortly after the incident happened at the ‘Abesan Estate Gate’ area of the state.

The explosion, it was learnt, resulted in a fire incident that destroyed property including vehicles.

Yusuff, who urged the federal government to rein in the cartel that vandalizes pipelines in the constituency and the state, lamented that the suspected criminals have continued to endanger the lives of the people.
