No progress made in fight against Boko Haram - EU scores Nigeria low
- The European Parliament of the EU has said that the fight against Boko Haram has been been very discouraging
- The parliament also said that President Muhammadu Buhari's promise to totally end insurgent activity has not been achieved
- According to the parliament, the country also needs to guide against the gross abuse of fundamental human rights
The European Parliament, the legislative hand of the European Union (EU), has said that no progress has been made in the war against Boko Haram.
The Cable reports that this disclosure was made in the EU resolution of Thursday, January 16, even as it notes that there have been attacks carried out by the insurgents in recent weeks.
In talking about the attacks, the parliament said that the security situation in the nation has worsened, saying there is no excuse for the abuse of human rights.
While making a statement on the security situation of the country, it also recalled the promise of President Muhammdu Buhari on stopping activities of the insurgent group.
“Deplores that progress has stalled in the fight against Boko Haram, ISWAP and the increased occurrence and severity of sui*cide attacks and direct attacks against military positions; recalls that Nigeria’s President Buhari was re-elected in 2019 on the promise of defeating the violent extremism promoted by Boko Haram and other terror groups, and urges the President to implement his campaign promises,” it said.
Among other important things the parliament noted, it also said that the reports of unnecessary detention in military facilities are very worrisome.
