Amotekun: Support for southwest governors' security outfit grows
- The support for Operation Amotekun has been increased considerably by the backing of several monarchs, unions and socio-cultural groups from the southwest
- While the monarchs are faulting Malami's declaration of the initiative as illegal, Yoruba groups are saying the initiative should be applauded
- Oyo ALGON said it is giving all its support to the security initiative that it noted could check crime in the southwest
Despite criticism from the attorney-general of the federation, Abubakar Malami, and recently, from the Nigerian military chiefs too, the support for the southwest governors' security initiative, codename Amotekun has continued to grow.
The Nation reports that no fewer than 18 Yoruba groups, monarchs and the Oyo state branch of the local government association, ALGON, have freshly backed the move.
While the Coalition of Oodua Self-determination Group (COSEG), which comprises at least 18 Yoruba groups have come out to back the move, monarchs from Ondo, Osun and Ekiti have also thrown their weight behind the initiative.
While the Ekiti monarchs described Malami's condemnation of Amotekun as hasty, the monarchs in Osun want him to withdraw his statement while the Ondo monarchs say the initiative has great promise of checking crime in the southwest.
On its part, Oyo state ALGON declared open support for the initiative in a statement.
"ALGON Oyo State supports Amotekun as we have been doing to create and support any move to address meaningfully the security of life and property as this is the fundamental objective and duty of government at all levels because without security there cannot be governance or development," the statement read in part.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported previously that southwest governors kicked off moves to give legal backing to the newly created regional security outfit, Operation Amotekun.
The laws to back up Amotekun are already before southwest states' houses of assemblies while lawmakers are already fast-tracking the legislation.
A source quoted in the report said all is in motion to swiftly pass the laws legalising the establishment of Operation Amotekun.
