Amotekun: Ex-Ogun governor Daniel joins Soyinka, Afe Babalola to back initiative

- Former Ogun state governor, Gbenga Daniel, has backed southwest governors on Amotekun initiative

- The governors had on Thursday, January 9, launched Operation Amotekun

- Soyinka and some prominent Nigerians berated AGF Malami for declaring Amotekun illegal

Following the declaration of the Amotekun initiative as illegal by the attorney general of the federation, Abubakar Malami, a former governor of Ogun state, Gbenga Daniel, has joined the list of prominent Nigerians throwing their weight behind the security outfit.

The Operation Amotekun initiative was inaugurated on Thursday, January 9, by the governors of the six states of the southwest zone.

Nigerian Tribune reports that Daniel, in a statement issued on Thursday, January 16, described the initiative as a good development towards the protection of lives and property of the people in the region.

He noted that there was nothing wrong in establishing the regional security outfit and other similar organisations since they were meant to complement the efforts of the Nigerian police and other security agencies in the country.

“On the legal and ethical controversy, I see Amotekun as putting a structure around what has been in existence for several years. In fact, the initiative of the governors bring informal security outfits under the law, so it cannot be an infraction against the constitution.

"People and communities have engaged in private security concerns to protect them over the years. The governors in their respective states are considered the chief executive and security officers. Except you are now stripping them of the ‘executive’ titles."

Legit.ng gathered that he said the southwest was gradually becoming an endangered region in terms of security of lives and properties, adding that before this gets out of hand, a quick and organised fix like Amotekun is desirable.
