Aminu Tambuwal: Court of Appeal upholds election of Sokoto state governor

The Court of Appeal on Friday, November 22, upheld the election of Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state.

The four-member panel of judges led by Justice Husseini Mukhtar declared that Tambuwal was duly elected and upheld the judgment of the tribunal which had earlier dismissed the petition filed against the governor by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its governorship candidate, Hon Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, Sun reports.

The court ruled that the appellant failed to prove the allegations of over-voting and stated that both appeal and cross-appeal were lacking in merit.

In another report, Governor Emeka Ihedioha of Imo state has described the Court of Appeal ruling which affirmed his election as a vindication of the mandate delivered to him by the people of the state.

The Imo state governor speaking on Tuesday, November 19, shortly after a five-man panel of the appellate court led by Justice Oyebisi Omoleye affirmed his victory, said the verdict of the court is a reaffirmation of confidence on Nigeria’s judicial system.

Ihedioha, who stated that his focus remained on rebuilding Imo, said he bears no ill against those with different political leanings who challenged the mandate freely given to him by the people of Imo state.

Meanwhile, the re-elected governor of Kogi state, Yahaya Bello, has expressed his readiness and that of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) to meet any of his opponents in court over the result of the November 16 Kogi governorship election.

The governor stated this when he fielded questions from journalists after he paid a visit to President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa, Abuja, on Thursday, November 21, The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

He said that the presentation of the certificate of return to him by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had proved that he won the gubernatorial election as expected.
