Appeal court confirms Ishaku the winner of Taraba governorship election

- An appeal court in Abuja has ruled in favour of Darius Ishaku of Taraba as winner of the governorship election in the state

- The court threw out the appeal of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for lacking merit

- An election tribunal had earlier thrown out the petition of the APC concerning the election

An appeal court sitting in Abuja, Nigeria's capital, on Monday, November 18, confirmed Darius Ishaku of Taraba as the validly elected governor of the state in the 2019 general election.

In delivering the ruling, the appeal court threw out the case filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) against the governor, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to the appellate court, the appeal of the APC lacks merit.

This Day reports that the decision of the appeal court was delivered in a unanimous ruling by a five-man panel.

The judges ruled that the tribunal was right that the APC had no lawful candidate in the March 9, 2019 governorship election in Taraba state.

The court noted that Abubakar Danladi, candidate of the APC, was disqualified by the Jalingo division of the Federal High Court on March 6, 2019, just before the governorship election.

The Taraba state governorship election tribunal had earlier thrown out the petition of the APC for the same reason the appeal court dismissed it.

The appeal court ruling in favour of Ishaku happened moments after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Yahaya Bello, candidate of the APC, winner of the governorship election just concluded in Kogi state.

Ibrahim Garba, vice-chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) and returning officer for the commission, gave the final figures and made the declaration at exactly 11.57 am on Monday, November 18.

Garba noted that Bello polled the highest number of votes in the election with 406,222 to defeat Musa Wada of the Peoples Democratic Party, who scored 189,704 in the election.

Legit.ng reports that the election of Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai of Kaduna had earlier been upheld by the state's division of the appeal court.
