Border closure: FG suspends building, operation of filling stations near borders
- The federal government is definitely serious about putting an end to smuggling of goods into Nigeria
- This is as the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has suspended the building and operation of filling stations near the country's borders
- DPR said that the decision was in compliance to the government's order in order to curtail the smuggling of petroleum products into Nigeria
In adherence to the order of the federal government, Nigeria's oil and gas regulator, Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), has put on hold indefinitely the applications for approval to construct and licence to operate filling stations near border areas of the country.
The DPR, in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Paul Osu, said that the decision was in keeping with the federal government's plan to put an end to the smuggling petroleum products into Nigeria, Daily Trust reports.
Concerning the order, Osu said that by this notice all depots and petroleum products suppliers are to immediately suspend supplies to these locations indefinitely.
In his response to the development, Comrade Salimon Akanni Oladiti, the national chairman of Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG)'s petroleum tanker drivers wing, said that compliance is the only response the body has to the directive.
Oladiti said that the order is part of the federal government's move to improve the country's economy and that they are behind the decision fully.
