Google Doodle, a special feature that honours important personalities, has recognised Chief Fumilayo Ransome-Kuti for human-centered activism and fighting for women’s rights.
Born on October 25, 1900, the mother of the king of Afropop, Fela Kuti, was one of the most recognised figure of feminism of her generation and also the first woman to drive a car in the country.
Also, she was the first female to enroll at the Abeokuta Grammar School where she schooled from 1914 to 1917. Little wonder she is regarded as the signpost of feminism in Nigeria.
Fumilayo was also at the forefront of the women’s campaign against unnecessary taxation in what was known as the Abeokuta Women’s Revolt, a movement that unseated Oba Ademola II in 1949.
She got the honorary national award called the Order of the Niger in 1965. In 1968, the University of Ibadan also gave her an honorary doctorate of law.
The activist was also very politically relevant as she was a member of the then ruling National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons party. In the 1950s, she got the nomination into the house of chiefs.
She later founded the Egba or Abeokuta Women’s Union with Grace Eniola Soyinka, the mother of Wole Soyinka, who also doubled as her sister-in-law.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that the popular Nigerian novelist, Onyebuchi Buchi Emecheta, was celebrated by online search engine, Google. Emecheta was honoured on July 21, 2019, a day which would have been her 75th birthday.
