Hunters, police arrest 7 kidnap suspects after victims’ escape

- Seven suspected kidnappers are arrested in Ondo after their victims' escape

- The victims had fled from the kidnappers' den and informed some local hunters who also notified the police

- One of those arrested is the son of a traditional chief in the affected area

Luck has run out of seven suspected kidnappers in Ondo state following their arrest by some hunters and men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The arrest of the kidnappers followed the reported escape of three of their victims, who alerted the local hunters, who, in turn, reported to security operatives.

The leader of the alleged syndicate, Wasiu Muhammed, who was said to be son of a traditional chief in the town, was said to have led the operatives to the arrest of other members.

Nigerian Tribune reports that the suspects had been causing fear among residents of Ajowa, Akunu and Auga Akoko in Akoko North-West local government area of Ondo state.

According to the report, the suspects had recently abducted a secondary school teacher, Alhaji Jamiu Zakariyahu, who was coming from a mosque around 8pm.

It was learnt that Zakariyahu was taken away in a waiting vehicle into the forest where they walked all through the night to the kidnappers’ den.

“The victims were tied with ropes, with their faces covered, while the abductors were negotiating N10 million ransom with families of the victims.

“The kidnappers reduced the ransom to N250,000 and were waiting for the payment before the victims could be released.

“But three of the victims were able to escape. They met some local hunters who informed security operatives in the town, a development that made then comb the forest, leading to the arrest of the kidnappers,” a source explained.

Rasak Rauf, area commander of of the police in Ikare, urged for cooperation from the residents in the battle against kidnapping and other crimes.

The armed kidnap suspects had laid siege on the highway opening fire on occupants of a Sharon vehicle coming from Port Harcourt to Abuja.
