Genevieve Nnaji’s blockbuster Lionheart makes Nigeria’s submission for Oscars
The Nigerian Oscars Selection Committee (NOSC) has revealed that actress Genevieve’s Nnaji’s movie, Lionheart, is the country’s selection for popular international awards, Oscars.
Lionheart was presented as the movie selected by the board for consideration under the International Feature Film category of the Oscars in year 2020.
This is obviously another feather in Genevieve’s hat seeing as the same movie’s right was acquired by global streaming network, Netflix on September 7, 2018.
According to The Nation, Lionheart is the first movie to be advanced to the Oscars by NOSC because other film entries did not seem to make the benchmark of their requirements.
According the NOSC chairwoman, Chineze Anyaene, it is impressive to see that filmmakers are paying attention to the laid down criteria and hopefully more Nigerian movies will make it to the Oscars in future.
She said: “While we cannot say that what we have are the best that Nigeria is capable of producing, it is heart-lifting to know that, from the strength of the entries received this year, we are truly ready for the Oscars. Filmmakers are gradually taking the Oscar rules into consideration, and I have no doubt that it is going to be more competitive, going forward”.
Lionheart was premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
