Nigeria at 59: Abuja city gate wears new look for independence anniversary

Visitors into the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja in the last few days must have noticed wholesome changes in the city gate.

To mark Nigeria's 59th independence anniversary, authorities in the nation's capital, beautified the city gate with brand new Nigerian flags, paintings, and photos of past Nigerian leaders.

“The decorations made the already beautiful Abuja landscape very pleasing to the eyes,” Ade Sowemimo, a lawyer, told Legit.ng close to the site.

The decorations began over the weekend as the federal government prepares for what has been so far a low key event.

The Abuja city gate is at the end of the Umaru Musa Yar'adua way, also known as Airport road, inbound the city centre.

As motorists approach the gigantic structure, they are greeted with colourful and breathtaking photos and the nation's flags visible on both sides of the double eight lanes road.

“I like them, they make the road beautiful,” a visibly elated Mohammed Abdullahi tells Legit.ng while admiring them on the side of the road.

Charity Ojonwa, an office assistant, however, said the decorations are needless.

According to her, “our leaders should focus on things that would improve our welfare and not things like this.

“This is just an avenue for some people to embezzle government funds and not out of patrotism.

“If you know how much that has been budgeted for this now, I am sure it would be in millions. We don't need it.”

Meanwhile, Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom has urged Nigerians to sustain their faith in the unity and capacity of the country to overcome the current challenges and realize its full potential as a prosperous nation.

The governor stated this in his independence message to Nigerians in a statement made available to journalists by his chief press secretary, Terver Akase.

The governor said God has steered Nigeria out of challenges and threats to its corporate existence and stressed that what Nigerians need to do at this time is to draw closer to God in their words and actions.
