Abia police warns of planned attacks on financial institutions

- Residents of Abia state have been warned of a planned attack by a gang of dreaded armed robbers

- Abia Police spokesperson, Geoffrey Ogbonna, said the gang has been mopping up arms in and around the state's capital city Abia, where they will stage the attack

- Ogbonna warned residents to avoid moving about with huge amounts of cash while he urged banks to adopt stronger security measures

- The police has offered N5million reward for anyone with information on the gang

The police in Anambra state has warned of planned attacks on banks by at a gang of dreaded armed robbers.

The Nations reports that the Abia State Police Command revealed the planned attack in a statement issued to pressmen in Aba, the state capital, on Sunday, September 29.

The release was signed by the Command's spokesman, Geoffrey Ogbonna, on behalf of the State Commissioner of Police, Ene Okon.

Ogbonna warned members of the public to avoid moving around with huge cash to escape being targets.

He also urged financial institutions in the city to increase their security alertness.

The government, he said, has offered a N5million reward to anyone with information on the gang and its planned attack.

The police statement stated: “Any member of the public with credible information that will lead to the arrest of the members of the gang should give it directly to the commissioner of Police for the purpose of absolute confidentiality.

“Members of the public are assured of the state government and Abia Police Command’s resolve to assure the protection of life and property of all law-abiding citizens of the state."

The alarm by the Abia police command came just days after Legit.ng heavily armed robbers on Thursday, September 26, stormed a bank in Ise Ekiti, blew the security door with dynamites and killed a policeman.

It was gathered that the robbery happened at about 2.30 pm with heavy shooting as the 10-man gang drove into the commercial bank.

Witnesses as saying the robbers operated for at least 25 minutes after coming into the town with two vehicles through Ikere road.
