Senegal: Biggest mosque in West Africa to officially open on Friday, September 27

A 30,000-capacity mosque, described as the largest in West Africa, will on Friday, September 27, be inaugurated in Dakar, Senegal, by the the country's influential Mouride Brotherhood.

Nigerian Tribune reports that the mosque, which stands at 255 feet, has a capacity of 15,000 worshippers inside and another 15,000 on an outside esplanade.

Legit.ng gathers that the interiors of the mosque include a gold-leaf dome, giant chandeliers and decorations hand-drawn by Moroccan workmen.

Mbackiyou Faye, who coordinated the construction work, said: “With this jewel, we are on a par with what we see in Arab countries and other places in Africa."

Faye said the amount of money expended in building the mosque exceeded 30 million euros ($33 million), all of which he said came from donations.

According to the minister of infrastructure, the government has additionally provided 10.5 million euros for lighting, sanitation and road works.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that one of the world's earliest known mosques, built around 1,200 years ago, was discovered by archaeologists in Israel's Negev Desert.

The remains, dating from the 7th or 8th century, were found in the Bedouin town of Rahat.

Israel's Antiquities Authority (IAA) said the mosque was unearthed during building work in the area.

According to IAA, it is the first known mosque from this period in the area, rivalling the age of those found in Mecca and Jerusalem.
