Nigeria may explode if we don’t tackle unemployment now - Ngige

- Chris Ngige has called for an adequate commitment to solving the issue of unemployment in Nigeria

- The minister said Nigeria may explode if unemployment is not tackled from the roots

- According to the minister, Nigeria would turn out like Venezuela if the challenge of unemployment continues

The minister of labour and productivity, Chris Ngige, has warned against the growing unemployment in Nigeria.

Ngige while receiving an award from the college of medicine, the University of Nigeria Nsukka at the weekend said Nigeria may explode sooner if unemployment in the country is not tackled urgently.

The minister said if the level of unemployment in the country is not tackled with adequate commitment, Nigeria would turn out like Venezuela.

Ngige said: "So, unemployment is growing into a big cankerworm. It is growing into a very vicious disease condition that has given rise to a lot of anti-social behaviours."

He also said that any uprising emanating from the would consume everybody.

Noting that the signs of unrest can be seen across the country, Ngige said, the All Progressives Congress (APC) led administration has also fashioned out some measures to deal with unemployment in Nigeria.

“The symptoms are there. Boko Haram is a symptom of unemployment in Nigeria. IPOB is a symptom of unemployment and desperation and people getting frustrated. Same goes for banditry in the northwest. Same goes for kidnapping all over the country. Avengers - the destruction of oil pipelines, OPC - all these are symptoms of very serious underlying disease condition called unemployment," Ngige said.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Ngige had assured Nigerians that the Federal government and the labour leaders will sort out the crisis on the implementation of the new minimum wage.
