Buhari receives German envoy, promises to invest in power sector

Following the public outcry about epileptic power supply in Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari has said that his government would invest hugely in the sector to make life bearable for Nigerians.
Legit.ng reports that the president on Thursday, September 19, said that Nigerians were eagerly looking forward to investments in the power sector that would illuminate their homes and stimulate businesses.
In a statement issued by Femi Adesina, the special adviser on media and publicity to the president, Buhari said this while receiving German and Ethiopian diplomats, Birgitt Ory and Azanaw Tadesse Abreha, shortly after signing an agreement with a German company, Siemens, to boost Nigeria’s power sector.
The president assured German companies that his government would honour terms of agreements on investments in the country.
Receiving letter of credence from the ambassador of Germany, at the State House, Buhari said the agreements signed with Siemens on power was most welcoming for the country, adding that Nigeria looks forward to partnerships that would be mutually beneficial.
He said that the country remains grateful to Germany for humanitarian interventions in the northeast for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), and the visit of the Chancellor, Angela Merkel, to Nigeria in August 2018, which according to him, further strengthened bi-lateral relations.
In her remarks, Ory said it was a great privilege to serve in Nigeria, which had always been her aspiration, stressing that Nigeria is the biggest and most important country in Africa.
“When I came to Nigeria last year in May, which was also my first time in Africa, as soon as I stepped out of the plane, I said this is where I will like to work,’’ she said.
Ory also congratulated Nigeria for holding two key positions in the United Nations: Deputy secretary general, Amina Mohammed, and the president of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Prof. Tijani Mohammad-Bande, saying that the country’s rising global profile reflects its pivotal role in Africa and West African region.
The German envoy assured Buhari that she would work towards improved relations between both countries.
President Buhari, who also received letters of credence from the ambassador of Ethiopia, encouraged diplomats to stay longer in the country in order to understand the dynamics of the culture, economy and landscape.
