Femi Gbajabiamila, the speaker of the House of Representatives, has said that the green chamber would authorise legal funding for Nigerians who were victims of the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
Channels TV reports that Gbajabiamila revealed this on Friday, September 6, at a press briefing on the xenophobic attacks in the country.
“The House will also authorise legal funding for victims of the attack who wish to take legal action against the perpetrators,” he said.
Legit.ng gathered that the speaker also called on Nigerians to avoid attacking South African businesses in Nigeria.
He further revealed that the House aligns with President Muhammadu Buhari on his decisions concerning the matter.
According to him, the House would invite the minister of foreign affairs, the Nigerian ambassador to South Africa and the chairman of the Diaspora Commission.
He further demanded that the South African government should conduct a thorough investigation and make public their findings.
Gbajabiamila also pledged the support of the lower chamber to President Buhari towards protecting Nigerians against xenophobic attacks in South Africa. According to him, the president has been taking proactive steps on the issue.
Speaking with State House correspondents after meeting with Buhari at the State House, on Friday, September 6, he said that he is on the same page with the president on the issue.
He said: “Engagement with Mr. President is not out of place even on a normal day but these are not normal days. The country in the last few days has witnessed unfortunate incidence in the last few days in South Africa."
