Xenophobia: MTN closes shop in Nigeria following looting, damage
- MTN has closed its outlet across the federation over the concern of its staff members in the ongoing reprisal xenophobic attacks in the country
- The telecommunication company, however, said that it is still committed to providing quality service in the country
- According to a press statement, the company said it is working with relevant authorities in both South Africa and Nigeria to ensure calm is restored
Following the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa and the reprisal reactions that occurred on some South African owned businesses in Nigeria, MTN has said it is closing its outlets across the federation.
The telecommunication outlet was razed in Bodija, Ibadan on Tuesday, September 3, despite appeals by the government for calm.
MTN made closure of its office known in a press release signed by the company secretary, Uto Ukpanah, saying it is however still committed “to providing uninterrupted services”.

It said that it will not allow that commitment towards quality service delivery go above the safety of its officials.
The telecommunication company used the opportunity to condemn all acts of violence or prejudice, saying it believes in a Nigeria and Africa where there is total peace and harmony.
It also said that it is working with all relevant authorities to ensure that the current tension is calmed.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that the federal government appealed to Nigerians not to attack the South African businesses operating in Nigeria in retaliation for the ongoing xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 3, in Abuja, the minister of information and culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said that targeting South African businesses in Nigeria, like Shoprite and MTN, for attack over Xenophobia would hurt Nigerians more.
He said attacking South African companies in Nigeria was, for Nigerians, "a classic case of cutting off your nose to spite your face”.
