Army denies alleged seizure of Borno towns, says troops repelled terrorists attacks

- The Army has reacted over alleged attacks on Borno communities by Boko Haram

- Boko Haram insurgents on Wednesday, August 21 reportedly attacked Gubio and Magumeri communities in the state

- According to the Army, the troops repelled the insurgents who attempted to forcefully enter the towns

Nigerian Army has denied seizure of Gubio and Magumeri communities in Borno state by the Boko Haram insurgents on Wednesday, August 21.

Legit.ng reports that the Army in a statement issued on Thursday, August 22, by the deputy director Army public relations, 7 Division, Colonel Ado Isa, said that the troops repelled the attacks and frustrated insurgents' efforts to loot people's shops in the areas.

Colonel Isa said the report that Boko Haram attacked the towns was not only false but an attempt to create unnecessary tension and fear in the minds of the residents.

The Army spokesman stated that the terrorists' attack was targeted at Nigerian Army troops deployed in the areas to enable the them gain access shops in the market in the towns to loot food items and other logistics.

Isa further noted that due to fierce exchange of fire, the terrorists were forced to withdraw in disarray from the town, resulting to damages on buildings and property along their route of withdrawal.

He said there were no casualty on the security force and no loss or damage to own equipment as wrongly insinuated on social media. He, however, said that a vigilante sadly lost his life in a cross fire, adding that some civilians in the area reportedly sustained various degrees of injuries.

"Peace has so far been restored in the communities with residents going about their lawful businesses.

"The Nigerian Army once again call on all well meaning members of the public to collaborate with the military and other security agencies in the area of sharing of information and suspicious movement of criminals in their communities to proactively deal with criminal activities," he said.
