Tramadol, Codeine: Nigeria Customs seize N5bn banned drugs in Lagos

- The Nigeria Customs Service said it seized banned drugs worth N5bn in a raid on a warehouse in Lagos state

- The Customs said it raided the facility after intercepting a drug-laden trailer in another part of the metropolitan city

- Usman Yahaya, team leader of the officials that made the seizure in Lagos, said a bigger stash of controlled drug was confiscated somewhere in Ogun state just recently

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced the seizure of a shockingly huge stash of banned drugs Tramadol and Codeine in the heart of the metropolitan city of Lagos.

The TV Continental reports that the NCS announced the seizure after it raided a warehouse in Lagos where cartons of Codeine, Tramadol and other illegal drugs worth N5bn were kept.

According to the report, Customs raided the warehouse which is located along the Mile 2-Oshodi Expressway after earlier intercepting a trailer of the drugs at Maryland area of Lagos.

Usman Yahaya, the team leader of the Customs Strike Force Zone A, explained how it all happened.

“Immediately it was brought to our notice, we carried out a preliminary investigation that led to the discovery of a warehouse along Oshodi-Mile 2 Road stocked with tramadol, codeine and other unregistered pharmaceutical products without NAFDAC numbers.

“The warehouse was immediately sealed with a detachment of well-armed officers to guard the place. The drugs estimated to be loaded in 21 trailers with street value of over N5bn are being evaluated for custody and subsequent judicial process and destruction," he said.

The Customs official said the NCS is serious about the war against illegal drugs in Nigeria. He also revealed an even more shocking find that the Customs made earlier somewhere in Ogun state.

He said: “Three weeks ago, the agency in collaboration with the National Administration of Food Drug Administration and Control destroyed 48 by 40 feet of controlled drugs worth N146billion in Ogun State.

“We therefore call on well-meaning Nigerians to support the Nigerian Customs Service on this resolution.”

Just recently, Legit.ng reported that the Nigeria Customs was praised for arresting a five-man gang that specialized in breaking into containers at Onne Port in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

Speaking on Tuesday, August 6, the area controller in charge of the port, Galadima Saidu, disclosed that the container was broken and some drugs were packed into two vehicles, but were subsequently seized

Saidu further disclosed that the N1 million bribe given to the operatives to allow the theft go unreported was turned down, and the money formed part of the exhibits.
